Abstract: | Magnesium nanocomposites containing ball milled Al-Al2O3 reinforcement were synthesized through powder metallurgy route using microwave assisted rapid sintering technique followed by hot extrusion. Microstructural characterization revealed fairly uniform distribution of ball milled Al-Al2O3 particles in the matrix and significant reduction in average matrix grain size in case of nanocomposite samples. Compared to monolithic Mg, Mg/0.972Al-0.66Al2O3 nanocomposite exhibited the best overall mechanical properties with an improvement of 96% in 0.2%YS, 80% in UTS, 42% in failure strain and 147% in work of fracture. The effect of composite (Al-Al2O3) reinforcement on the enhancement of mechanical properties of Mg is investigated in this paper. |
