Abstract: | Background: Romania makes no difference among other countries regarding the high prevalence of diabetes which had become a problem of public health, continuously growing. Our aim was to review clinical characteristics, prevalence, complications and the quality of life of patients being diagnosed with diabetes.
Methods: We got through the literature for both longitudinal and cross-sectional studies that reported the main characteristics of patients diagnosed with diabetes and polyneuropathy.
Findings: Diabetic neuropathy, affects almost half of the patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. The most common syndrome is peripheral neuropathy (DPN). There are several risk factors that are usually involved in the pathogenesis of DPN, some of the most important being the poor glycemic control, diabetes duration and all leading factors of macrovascular disease including an elevated blood pressure, dyslipidemia and smoking. The most striking symptom that patients with DPN experience is the neuropathic pain. Painful DPN is very common, affecting up to 26% of the patients and as a debilitating symptom, physicians are trying hard to coop with it, trough pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. |
