Abstract: | Peptic ulcer disease is not so prevalent in the pediatric population; only 5 in 2500 admission in a year
are due to this pathology.
We are presenting the case of a 6 year old boy that was transferred in our department with the
diagnostic of acute abdomen not related with surgical problems.
At admission the child was malnourished, serious dental problems, with diffuse abdominal pain
hematemesis and melena. Initial lab exams were normal but on the second day of admission reveal
normochromic, microcytic anemia and negative and H. pylori antigen stool test came negative. The upper
endoscopy showed gastric angiodysplasia and signs of peptic ulcer. The treatment was according to
international protocols and the evolution of the patient was favorable.
Even though peptic ulcer disease and gastric angiodyslasia are rarely encountered in the pediatric
population, we must include them in the differential diagnosis of acute abdominal syndrome especially when
there is an important psychological component. |
